Summer 2019 Training Program

Description: This City of Eugene Athletics class builds distances steadily toward a peak of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). All levels of runners can join us, but the program focuses on the needs of people going this far for the first time (or first in a long time) and not on high-speed or longer-distance racing. Though we use the word “run” here, run/walkers and speed-walkers are welcome.

Dates: Tuesdays, June 18th to August 6th, with a “graduation exercise” of the Oregon Track Club 5K event on the final Thursday.

Registration: All runners must properly register for the class on the Eugene Athletics website (https://www.teamsideline.com/sites/eugene/program/21534/Eugene-Athletics-5k-Training-Program-Summer-2019)
or in person at the Amazon Community Center office. This is not designed as a free-for-all, drop-in program. Those exist elsewhere in the community, the largest being at the RunHub store on Wednesday evenings.

Locations: Meet for all classes at the Amazon Center except the last one. (The exception is the concluding OTC 5K at Dorris Ranch in Springfield, which has a minimal entry fee of $5.) Easy parking, a restroom and water fountain are available at Amazon Park. All runs stay on this park’s paved paths and woodchip trail, with no street crossings.

Instructor: Joe Henderson taught a similar class at the University of Oregon from 2001 to 2018, and he continues to coach a marathon/half-marathon training team at the Eugene Running Company. E-mail: joesrunteam@gmail.com. Text: 541-953-7179. "Office": at Tuesday’s run site, half-hour before and after each class.

Equipment: Running requires minimal equipment. Most important are shoes designed for running and a personal timing device (watch or phone). Dress for the activity and the day's weather, which can be hot at this time of the year and hour of the day.

Runs: The class meets just once a week, but you're wise to run at least two more days each week on your own. This not only meets the accepted minimum requirement of three sessions a week for improving fitness, but also starts establishing a habit of independent running. Recommended additional runs are no longer than that Tuesday's distance.

Reports: It’s a paperless class, with reporting and teaching appearing on this blog. It carries results for each week’s run, a preview of the next one, and a brief lesson on some key aspect of running.

Schedule: Classes begin promptly at six p.m. with check-in, description of the day's session, warmup, main run and cooldown. The day's main entire session lasts less than an hour. Report your results to the instructor for the combined log he keeps.
